One of the historic barns featured on the 2011 Winnakee Land Trust's Tour of Historic Barns and Working Farms, the Lown Dutch barn is one of the smallest classic Dutch barns in America.
The original barn was a 2-bay structure with H-bent construction (these are the three H-shaped post-and-beam structures that support the building). The hand-hewn timbers are well preserved. The barn has a partial dug-out basement under the east end.
This barn and the Palatine Homestead on Route 9 are close to the earliest Rhinebeck Village Palatine settlement, which was centered near the intersection of Wey Road and Albany Post Road (Route 9). The cemetery at that location dates from the early settlement, circa 1716.
The barn is sited on Wey Rd.— a scenic, country road. It was carefully renovated with attention to preserving the original structure and creating a light-filled and open living space in the mid 1990s. |
